In 2024, the <span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">gross merchandise volume (GMV) exceeded<a href=\"https:\/\/baijiahao.baidu.com\/s?id=1830747120282455736&amp;wfr=spider&amp;for=pc\" target=\"_blank\">&nbsp;RMB 5.2 trillion<\/a>, an increase of RMB <\/span>800 million compared to 2023. Consumers are also extremely active, having an average of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tmogroup.com.cn\/insights\/china-marketplace-ranking\/\">200 million MAU<\/a>s (Monthly Active Users) as of January 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since 2023, Taobao has launched the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/zhuanlan.zhihu.com\/p\/614814107\">top store list<\/a>\u201d (\u795e\u5e97\u699c), a series of online shops that are often praised for their after-sales service, high quality of their products, and good reputation. Shops that receive this label obtain special benefits such as more visibility in the search results and better assistance service. This creates a sustainable ecosystem to maintain consumers\u2019 trust and incentivize shop owners to improve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Taobao won over Gen Z with anime collabs<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Millennials and <a href=\"https:\/\/daxueconsulting.com\/christmas-in-china\/\">Gen Z,<\/a> born after 2000, are one of the main <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sohu.com\/a\/808565528_114930\">targets<\/a> in Taobao\u2019s marketing strategy. Since 2024, the Chinese e-commerce platform <a href=\"https:\/\/finance.sina.cn\/2024-09-12\/detail-incnxaaf0779713.d.html?from=wap\">has collaborated<\/a> with several anime and video games to launch a personalized collection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A standout example is the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/zhuanlan.zhihu.com\/p\/14467195929\">pain bag<\/a>\u201d, or itabag, which Olympian Quan Hongchan carries. The bag became a hot topic on <a href=\"https:\/\/daxueconsulting.com\/social-media-platforms-in-china\/\">social media platforms<\/a> like <a href=\"https:\/\/daxueconsulting.com\/xiaohongshu-china\/\">RedNote<\/a> during the 2024 Olympic Games. The topic registered more than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.xiaohongshu.com\/search_result?keyword=%25E7%2597%259B%25E5%258C%2585&amp;source=web_explore_feed\">10.7 million posts<\/a> as of April 2025. Together with Taobao, the e-commerce platform&#8217;s sales revenue accounted for <a href=\"https:\/\/baijiahao.baidu.com\/s?id=1792676573331490987&amp;wfr=spider&amp;for=pc\">45%<\/a> of the total market in 2023. Despite being two platforms of the same big tech group (Alibaba), Tmall and Taobao share a few yet fundamental <a href=\"https:\/\/bk.taobao.com\/k\/taobao_6\/2abcf9fa402dd347dda5d58e96b0522f.html\">differences<\/a>. While Taobao concentrates more on the variety of products and C2C commerce, Tmall focuses on official brands selling their products. Thus, the quality perceived by the consumer is higher. The presence of Tmall in the Chinese e-commerce scenario is growing stronger year-on-year, with an increase of <a href=\"https:\/\/baijiahao.baidu.com\/s?id=1820570846875846295&amp;wfr=spider&amp;for=pc\">83%<\/a> in vendors\u2019 subscription to its site in 2024. Furthermore, foreign brands\u2019 presence on Tmall is unmatched. As of 2025, the platform has gathered more than <a href=\"http:\/\/m.cnhubei.com\/pcmedia\/detail?id=1913012\">40,000 brands<\/a> from more than 90 countries. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">From 90s to 00s: Why Tmall is betting big on paid memberships<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Tmall wants to <a href=\"https:\/\/user.guancha.cn\/main\/content?id=1333683\">attract<\/a> more post-90s and post-00 (Gen Z) consumers, as they represent the majority of online consumers. This consumer group accounted for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.cn\/yaowen\/liebiao\/202406\/content_6960038.htm\">95.1%<\/a> and 88.5%, respectively, as of June 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tmall launched special memberships such as VIP88 to attract repeat consumers. <a href=\"https:\/\/baike.baidu.com\/item\/88VIP\/22805068\">Launched<\/a> on Taobao in 2018 and Tmall in 2024, VIP88 is Tmall\u2019s most popular paid membership that offers personalized discounts and fixed lower prices at specific shops like Tmall Supermarket. In 2024, the company\u2019s net revenues accounted for <a href=\"https:\/\/ir.jd.com\/news-releases\/news-release-details\/jdcom-announces-fourth-quarter-and-full-year-2024-results-and\">RMB 1.1 trillion<\/a>, increasing by 6.8% compared to 2023. JD.com can also be placed among the biggest e-commerce platforms in terms of MAUs, boasting more than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tmogroup.com.cn\/insights\/china-marketplace-ranking\/\">91.4 million monthly active users<\/a> as of January 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the core strengths of the platform is the capillary expansion of its logistics and delivery system, called \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jdl.com\/en\">JINGDONG Logistics<\/a>\u201d or \u201cJDL\u201d. Established in 2017, the service <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jingdonglogistics.com\/about\">consists of<\/a> a wide network of plants and warehouses to facilitate and enhance the delivery time of the goods purchased on the platform. By the end of 2024, JD&#8217;s express delivery network <a href=\"https:\/\/jdcorporateblog.com\/jd-logistics-expands-international-express-delivery-with-new-service-from-china-to-japan-and-south-korea\/\">employed<\/a> over 300,000 delivery personnel and operated more than 1,600 warehouses across China and internationally. Its infrastructure enabled 90% of JD&#8217;s retail orders to be delivered within 24 hours nationwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Apart from customer services, in March 2025, the company announced the \u201cspring dawn plan\u201d (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.news.cn\/health\/20250304\/d27eea0384ac4033adfb70072e1babf4\/c.html\">\u6625\u6653\u8ba1\u5212<\/a>), allowing vendors to easily open their online shop. The plan consists of <a href=\"https:\/\/mtt.jd.com\/article\/articleView\/077a04f7-9756-4f48-882e-01dd41533978\">3 phases<\/a>: open an online shop during the free trial period, obtain subsidies to make products known to consumers, and participate in exclusive activities to boost sales. Both JD.com and Taobao have introduced the option \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/help.jd.com\/user\/issue\/327-3886.html\">return without a reason<\/a>\u201d respectively in <a href=\"https:\/\/help.jd.com\/user\/issue\/127-427.html\">2017<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/bk.taobao.com\/k\/taobaoxingui_480\/10651a3aac16528b158728a88eb671c1.html\">2024<\/a>. Within 7 days after the delivery, consumers can return their product, even if not damaged, and get a complete refund. However, the two platforms differed slightly: on JD.com, there are no strict rules on the refund, whereas on Taobao, the product must be <a href=\"https:\/\/bk.taobao.com\/k\/taobaoxingui_480\/10651a3aac16528b158728a88eb671c1.html\">intact<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Furthermore, the refund system is operated by vendors, who can also refuse to send money back to the consumer because the purchase has already been made. This is a hot topic on platforms like <a href=\"https:\/\/daxueconsulting.com\/weibo-marketing-strategy\/\">Weibo<\/a>, in which consumers <a href=\"https:\/\/m.weibo.cn\/status\/5163318348354647\">complain<\/a> about the scarce after-sales service of Taobao. At the end of April 2025, the return without reason came to an end. The e-commerce platforms in China have mutually agreed to <a href=\"https:\/\/mp.weixin.qq.com\/s\/p1ZsE5lzd0z02sbiMQI9WA\">deactivate<\/a> this option on their apps in order to avoid malice among vendors and consumers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pinduoduo: The most famous group buying platform<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/daxueconsulting.com\/pinduoduo-chinese-low-tier-city-consumers\/\">Pinduoduo<\/a> operates as a <a href=\"https:\/\/m.pinduoduo.com\/en\/\">group-buying platform<\/a>, prioritizing bulk sales over individual consumer preferences. In 2024, the Chinese e-commerce giant reported revenue of <a href=\"https:\/\/gushitong.baidu.com\/stock\/us-PDD?mainTab=%E8%B4%A2%E5%8A%A1&amp;sheet=%E5%88%A9%E6%B6%A6%E5%88%86%E9%85%8D%E8%A1%A8&amp;reportAnchor=%E6%80%BB%E8%90%A5%E6%94%B6&amp;reportTime=%E5%B9%B4%E6%8A%A5&amp;industrySelect=2024%E5%B9%B4%E6%8A%A5\">RMB 108 billion<\/a>, marking a growth of over 88% from the previous year. The company\u2019s marketing strategy is built on a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/vizologi.com\/business-strategy-canvas\/pinduoduo-business-model-canvas\/#:~:text=Founded%20in%202015%20by%20Colin,teams%20to%20get%20lower%20prices.\">consumer-to-manufacturer<\/a>\u201d model and offers two prices: a standard price for solo purchases and a lower group-buying price. This Chinese e-commerce platform is especially popular in rural China due to its <a href=\"https:\/\/baijiahao.baidu.com\/s?id=1812049187231834951&amp;wfr=spider&amp;for=pc\">low-priced<\/a> products, which, thanks to its group-buying feature, are accessible even to low-budget consumers. In June 2024, the platform registered <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/1489558\/china-leading-mobile-ecommerce-platform-mau\/#:~:text=MAU%20of%20major%20mobile%20shopping%20apps%20China%202024&amp;text=In%20June%202024%2C%20Mobile%20Taobao,million%20mobile%20users%20that%20month.\">695 million MAUs<\/a>, and almost <a href=\"https:\/\/www.21jingji.com\/article\/20250205\/herald\/f643d9ae3bd9e7b9a81eb17d527a2c27.html\">307 million<\/a> of them were young people and middle-aged men living in lower-tier cities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pinduoduo\u2019s rural expansion<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2024, <a href=\"https:\/\/daxueconsulting.com\/pinduoduo-chinese-low-tier-city-consumers\/\">Pinduoduo<\/a> expressed the objective of enhancing this rural trend by launching the project \u201c e-commerce moving west\u201d (<a href=\"https:\/\/finance.sina.com.cn\/roll\/2025-01-06\/doc-ineecrxc4850142.shtml\">\u7535\u5546\u897f\u8fdb<\/a>). In 2024, Pinduoduo\u2019s foreign counterpart, Temu, registered roughly <a href=\"https:\/\/backlinko.com\/temu-stats\">RMB 515 billion<\/a> in GMV, and 292 million MAUs worldwide. Apart from inland and foreign e-commerce platform, there is also another \u201cPinduoduo\u201d: launched in 2020, the app is called \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/mdkd.pinduoduo.com\/\">\u591a\u591a\u4e70\u83dc<\/a>\u201d (Duoduo grocery shop).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, despite the huge success, the app is struggling to keep up with other e-commerce platforms.
